Lighthouse Lymphedema Network History

IN 1994, the Lighthouse Lymphedema Network held its first meeting in the home of its founder, Joan White. Those  present consisted of patients, family members, one occupational therapist and one massage therapist. The OT and MT would go on to get their certification in CDP (Complete Decongestive Physiotherapy) treatment of lymphedema.

From this first meeting, the group has never looked back. When the group outgrew the home setting, the meetings were moved to the Cecil B. Day Sports and Fitness Center, in Atlanta, Georgia. Always, the focus has been on support, education and awareness. Through the efforts of the LLN, October 22nd has been declared the State of Georgia Lymphedema Awareness Day. Over the years, this day has been celebrated with speakers such as: David Addiss, M.D., Kathleen Francis, M.D., Peter Johnstone, M.D., Paula Stewart, M.D., Bonnie Lasinski, PT, CLT-LANA, DeCourcy Squire, PT, CLT-LANA, Saskia Thiadens, RN, NLN Executive Director.

In the past, the LLN has organized "Shedding Light on Lymphedema" programs bringing some of the most respected speakers in the country to St. Joseph Hospital, Emory University Hospital, and Chattanooga, TN.

Patients, family members, certified therapists, vendors and other outside support keep the group energized to reach our goals.  Our thanks to the many certified therapists and vendors who have presented workshops on topics covering exercise, nutrition, skin care, research, imaging, bandaging, garments, nightwear and other products important for the lymphedema patient.

The LLN publishes a quarterly newsletter, informational brochures, sponsors group meetings, and participates in medical events. The Annual Gloria Watts-Cox Foundation Walk/Run for Lymphedema is one of our many fundraisers.

The LLN welcomes members to become involved in helping us to achieve our goals.
